BUILDING
Second Street Gallery is located inside the City Center for Contemporary Arts, a multi-use facility built in 2003. Designed by Bushman-Dreyfus Architects, based in Charlottesville, with R.E. Lee as general contractor, the C3A houses three nonprofit organizations: Live Arts (a community theater), Light House (a youth media organization), and Second Street Gallery, which is located on the ground floor. With a total of 27,000 square feet, and an accessible roof terrace, the building is one of the rare examples of contemporary architecture in Historic Downtown Charlottesville, featuring polychrome details and a skin made of turned aluminum. The C3A received the Preservation Award for new construction in an Historic District, given by the City of Charlottesville Board of Architectural Review in October 2004.
